Cindy enjoyed 40 years as an educator, with 37 of those years in Lincoln Public Schools as a teacher, curriculum specialist for primary education, and a principal at two schools (Hawthorne Elementary and Adams Elementary). Her last position as director of elementary education provided the opportunity to support and supervise the 40 LPS elementary principals. She retired from LPS in June, 2021. Cindy continues as a Teammate with LPS, trains local substitutes, and provides professional learning and coaching for Lincoln Catholic Schools. She is an active member at Trinity United Methodist Church and chairs the Childcare Board governing the church’s two childcare centers. She’s been married to Greg for 40 years and loves spending time with their three energetic grandsons; Ezra, Holden and Finn.
Below is a Q & A with Cindy:
1. What is one fun fact people may not know about you?
My husband and I have a tandem bicycle that we enjoy riding.
2. What is your favorite activity to do in Lincoln or your favorite place to eat in Lincoln?
I love taking my grandsons on “field trips” in Lincoln. The Children’s Zoo, State Capitol, Pioneers Park, Morrill Hall and the Sunken Gardens are some of our faves.
3. What hobbies do you most enjoy?
I have been playing the piano since I was 9 and still find it is the best way for me to relax. Since retiring, I started taking lessons once again and am enjoying a return to the classics and learning new techniques. I like to read, walk, the challenge of a tricky jigsaw puzzle, and biking with my husband and friends.
4. Why is the White Cane Foundation important/appealing to you?
As an educator, I saw first-hand the negative impact living in poverty can have on students’ learning. Ensuring basic needs are met, raises confidence in students which increases concentration, the ability to persevere, and strengthens the odds of learning. The WCF positively impacts students, giving them the opportunity to begin each day with clean clothes that fit, shoes and socks, and personal hygiene items. When you feel comfortable and good about yourself, it’s easier to meet the challenges of the day and to create positive outcomes. WCF “Bundles of Joy” do just that!
