As an Occupational Therapist in Lincoln Public Schools for the past 25 years, Laurie has been fortunate to work on many teams of amazing educators that problem solve strategies to facilitate student learning. She and husband, Duane, have three children, with only one left at home before becoming empty nesters. Laurie has been involved with several community volunteer roles, the most meaningful of which was as a long-time board member with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. While serving on the JDRF board she was active in fundraising and government advocacy, and hopes to use what she learned to benefit The White Cane Foundation.
Let’s get to know Laurie with a little Q + A:
What is one fun fact people may not know about you?
I was the worst golfer on an amazingly talented state-championship golf team at Lincoln Southeast. I still laugh at the thought that I am pictured in the athletic hall of fame hallway at the school.
What is your favorite activity to do in Lincoln or your favorite place to eat in Lincoln?
I love the Lincoln bike trail system, and taking my dog Dundee for a long walk on various trails is one of both of our favorite things to do in town!
What hobbies do you most enjoy?
In my spare time my husband and I enjoy spending time with close friends, often watching Husker sporting events, golfing, or having fun on game nights.
Why is the White Cane Foundation important/appealing to you?
I have seen first-hand how the White Cane Foundation has provided new clothing and hygiene products to students in need, giving them dignity and confidence. This then leads to increased attendance and graduation rates. Being involved with an organization that can be so impactful to students in our community makes this a highly motivating group to join!
